She would have just had the hologram on the entire time, but then the way she was acting wouldn't make any sense at all. Better for Flynn to see what happened to her, at least momentarily.
Melanie is incredibly grateful to Kurt for letting her borrow it, but at the end of the day her mind just keeps on wandering back to the fact that it's just a hologram. If someone touches her, she'll still feel scaly and cold. She still has no hair. She still has fangs. She's still venomous. She's still an inhuman freak.]
